Calling new and emerging Island Studies practitioners and researchers: We kindly invite you to use the form at the bottom of this page to submit abstracts for the special New Voices in Island Studies plenary session at the Jersey Conference in June 2025. The plenary session will be given special attention by the conference organizers and have a prominent slot in the conference program.

The theme of the plenary session is: the future of island studies – discussions on innovative research and research methodologies, undisciplining the discipline, and bridging the gap between different schools of thought. We are keen to feature contributions which highlight ongoing research projects as well as those which identify opportunities for future collaborative research. We welome both presentations which use a traditional format and more innovative approaches – you will be asked to specify the approach you will take when you submit your abstract. It is intended that all speakers will take part in a panel discussion as part of the session.

Deadline for submitting an abstract is 1st of November 2024 and all abstracts should be submitted using the online submission form at https://forms.gle/Uf92ntVDhaqLRVkJ9.  It is intended that notification of abstract acceptance will be by the end of the same month. The abstract should consist of 200 words, include a maximum of 5 keywords, and focus on how you intend to address the theme. Any inquiries as to the suitability of proposed topics and/or proposals for panels can be sent to both k.gow.21@abdn.ac.uk and jens.westerskov_andersen@soc.lu.se

Given that we are likely to receive more abstracts for the plenary session than we can accommodate, we also remind you that you can submit an ordinary abstract for paper/research presentations – see https://shimajournal.org/conferences.php for more details. Either way, having an abstract accepted for the conference may improve your chances of getting funding/travel grants from your home institution.
